Type any word or phrase and the gematria calculator will calculate the simple gematria value and the Jewish gematria (a.k.a.Hebrew gematria) value of this word, as well as display other words with the same gematria values. Type a number and the gematria decoder will display other words with the same gematria values. This 1 – 900 series, plus the subdivision of the 27-letter series into three enneads of nine sequential letters, is the same as the Greek alphabet. Hence some think Jewish gematria was modelled on Greek isopsephia. Even the position of a Hebrew letter in the alphabet can be significant. The gematric nomination for 18 is chet plus yud, which spells chai, or ‘life’. Going one step further, some kabbalists find meaning in the name of the letters themselves. It echoes the similar word, tzadik, righteous person; and the name of the tzadik Isaac appears 104 times in the Tanach. The fourth method, Mispar Katan Mispari, integral reduced value, reduces the total value of the word to a single digit number. If the sum exceeds nine, then the integer values of the total are added together again and again until a single digit number is received. For example, the word, ḥesed has an absolute or normative value of 72. The ḥet equals 8, the samakh equals 60, and the dalet equals 4. The numbers of the sum of 72 are then added together to equal 9. It should be pointed out that the integral reduced value of the ordinal value and the reduced value of ḥesed also add up to 9. It certainly can waste time, as in the form of pilpul – sophistry connected with analysis of Talmudic passages. Especially controversial was the use of gematria to calculate when the Messiah would arrive.
